This is the second book in the Exceptional series.

Ally lowered her hands and stared at the pile of ash in front of her. They made it four hours into their morning travels before they ran into another pair of Exceptional Guards. The Guards had approached Ally and her group with ease, expecting an easy catch. Once again, Ally had raised her hands and eliminated the Guards before they took another step toward her or the others. She stood over the pile, breathing heavily.
She felt Stosh come up beside her, his arm brushing against hers.
“Seven,” she said in almost a whisper.
“I know,” he responded, taking her hand in his.

Ally is finally outside the City walls, with her brother and her best friends.

Luke is still inside the City walls, with no memory of the girl he once loved.

Life in the Wilderness is dangerous, and they soon find out that they are not alone. Will Ally continue her journey to the Southern City, or will she risk it all to help the boy she loves?

Rogue Exceptional Book 2 eBook Jess Petosa

More easy reading as Ally was kidnapped and taken to "The City" where she was claimed by Luke, the City Leader's son, and taken to his house where she was cleaned up and befriended by Sabine and the other Ordinarys who were born in The City and who work for Aden’s family. Of course, Ally later learns that she is a latent Exceptional when she is angered and the buzzing, trembling runs through her body and out of the ends of her fingers where she zaps a couple of Exceptional Guards who were hassling her. She is immediately taken to the Institute for training to learn to control her new gifts. Meantime, back at “The Settlement/Village” where Ally hails from her mother and brother are brought into “The City” where her mother is shot in the head in front of her by Aden, Luke’s father. Of course, Ally and Luke have fallen in love. The story goes on to describe other settlements and “The Southern City” and she sets off with a group to find it. On the way, she finds another settlement where she and her friends discover wild colored clothes, tight jeans, high heel shoes, and makeup from warehouses packed with the ancient stuff.

A vaccine is also discovered as it has been developed by one of the men in the village. The vaccine will make the Exceptionals and the Rogues into Ordinarys. Deals are made with “The City” and gone wrong. Ally has fallen for Max from the new settlement but still loves Luke who was mind swiped when she left “The City” so that he no longer remembers her.

There is a lot of walking going on. There is some transport in “The City.” However, there is never any mention of old roadways, such as INTERSTATES which could not have grown over completely in less than 200 years.

As mentioned, this is certainly easy reading and is definitely for Teenagers and Young Adults. This is not the Lady Chatterley I read as a 14-year-old.

Rogue Exceptional Book 2 eBook Jess Petosa Reviews

I bought this the moment it came out! It is such a good story, nice characters, great plot. I really like how the story develops (some mystery but not so much that you're nearing the end of the book and still have no idea what's going on!). This was just a really excellent follow-up to the first story and I cannot wait for the third! (There better be a third!!!)

HOWEVER...

This book needs editing. I found the last one to be OK (I read it recently, after it was re-edited). In this one, I found a homonym issues, a lot of spelling errors that spell check wouldn't catch (because it's a correctly spelled wrong word, if that makes sense), formatting issues (odd paragraph breaks, a chapter title that wasn't the normal chapter text/font), and even a who/whom mistake. I'm by no means an editor or English teacher, so if I found a good 15-20 mistakes than there are probably more. Maybe there is some glitch in the process that coverts the text into the e-book file format or something. Some books seem full of these problems.
I really liked the concept of this book series. The characters were very developed and the story was a grabber for me as I am a dystopian junkie. That's where my praise for this book ends.

I was truly loving going through the chapters and seeing where things would go. This book is in SERIOUS need of an editor that can spell and actually proof read. For some reason, the editor thought that the words "no" and "know" could be used interchangably.

The biggest rub for this book was the ending. It truly felt like "well, I don't have time for this story telling thing anymore, we'll just end it here!" The story ended very abruptly, leaving a ton of questions left unanswered for the reader. And the worst, the epilogue threw over a half a dozen unexplained twists to the story and just ended.

This series should have gone for three books by the unfolding story from the first book. Instead, the readers that paid the investment of reading time and money only received about one and a half books. My recommendation is don't read either book, as you are left wanting with no pay off!
Rogue was almost everything a sequel should be-exciting, full of suspense, happy, sad. It was good. The only thing that would've made it, well, exceptional? It would've been exceptional if the editing had been handled better. Another annoying thing for me, at least, was how there's been a lack of contractions in each book. "She is [not she's] doing great". That was not an example from the book, the lack of 'she's' 'what's' 'they're' made some of the sentence structures just really awkward. It just felt unnatural to me. Other than those 2 things, though, I enjoyed the book.

The depths of the characters could've used some work as well. Ally, for instance, is oddly emotionless yet supposedly exploding with emotions. Lukin's mom, we never really learn her deal. Aden? The reasoning behind what he does isn't as well thought out as it could've been....it was REALLY shallow! Especially the huge risks involved. Willow? I wouldn't ever have guessed that her & Ally were bffs, Sabine seemed more of a friend to Ally and vice versa.

I did enjoy seeing both Luke and Ally's perspectives, I did enjoy the story, I will read the final book-and am looking forward to it-but at the same time, with a bit more tweaking this story could be even better than it is. Also, the ending, concerning Champaign citizens & the exceptionals was off. This guy gets allllll this stuff ready & can do something extraordinary & ends up walking away? Umm, why? You'll know what I'm talking about, cuz he'll literally be walking.

I recommend this book, but if you're the type who can't stand typos and like a good book but not GRAND one, you might want to stay away. So, kind of a 50/50 recommendation from me.
